I’ve been asked that a dozen of times and my answer is always like this:
When I found out that I sucked in math.
No kidding. The main reason why I chose Journalism as my major was because there was no Math subjects there. I actually checked first the list of subjects under each major and I was looking for any degree that has no ‘counting of numbers’ as one of its prerequisites. I was able to narrow down my choices to either Journalism or Asian History.
Back then I was leaning towards Asian History. I only changed my mind when a friend asked me, “What job will you get with that degree?”
I thought really hard about it and the only jobs that I could think of was working in a museum or becoming a History teacher. Neither were to my liking.
Journalism on the other hand opens up to a lot of opportunities even at first glance. Anyway, any form of writing degree can lead to different jobs and careers and the possibilities of growth are truly endless.
Now I’m into web copy writing and I couldn’t have been happier.

I can’t believe that. No math in Journalism? Ows? I’ve always believed that all university courses have at least an Algebra subject – even if that subject is a minor one.
You did a good choice though. A decade ago, I never had the idea that copywriters like you would really earn a lot from the web.
Gem´s last blog post..Are you Twitterpated on Twitter’s Money Makers?

Hi Gem. I was from UST and we had this set-up in college: 1st and 2nd years, general subjects including Algebra, English, etc. Then after our 2nd year we will choose our major. I chose Journalism so for my 3rd and 4th years in college, we only had Journalism subjects… and yes, no math.
Writing is a wonderful talent. I choose it over math any day!
i agree with the two of them because there are some schools or collages who can’t make it to teach their students with these two but, there are some who did
