Understanding Why We Write

by Mj Ces on June 3, 2009

Why do we write?

As a job? To earn a living? To express our thoughts and emotions? To share our knowledge? Or simply because we’re good at it?

I first started to write creatively when I read Jules Verne’s “A Journey to the Center of the Earth”. It was science fiction that got me mesmerized into reading a novel or any fiction for that matter. For years I’ve tried to duplicate that talent, trying my hand in fiction writing of the incredible, bizarre and simply outrageous. But alas, I admit I am not gifted that way.

Or is it I have not yet polished my craft?

I still keep on writing fiction although less frequently now. I somehow lost my zest as life turned more serious with all-new responsibilities and obligations mainly for my family. Suddenly life hit me hard. I have to earn a living and set aside my ambition to be a great writer.

But legends are born out of difficulties. Edgar Allan Poe died penniless and yet he crafted poems and stories that until now can send shivers down anybody’s spine. There are a lot of others like him who continued writing, perhaps because they knew they were good at it, and yet all the while not earning enough from it.

I have this long-standing dream to publish just one book before I die. A fiction. Right now all that I want is a children’s story book that will stand through the ages. Am I too ambitious? The way I see it, if you’re going to dream, dream big.

Am I making sense here? Forgive me if I do not. This is one of those times when I write while I think (or feel) and doesn’t bother much about conformity and the rules of good writing.

I’m in dreamland, everybody.

There’s nothing wrong with dreaming, you know. Many huge successes come from simple dreams.

Now that you have that dream, just take little steps to achieve it. Your goal should always be realistic though.

Eventually success follows. Good luck!

that’s how i feel and think too when i write my posts. though i may not be as fluent or as ambitious, nonetheless, i write however my emotions and ideas lead me.

i believe that’s the good think about having a blog. it gives you a venue to write hwo life has been going on with you.

let’s just keep us writng. if it sums up to earning from it then nice. but if not, let writing be the reward itself.

more power to us.

I think as writers, we all write because it is a passion living deep within us. We all have different genres which we enjoy. Just keep your dreams close and you will succeed.

Maybe we write, because we all have stories to tell. Whatever the reason, it sure is fun!

I’ve always wanted to write fiction, too. I tried it once, but I didn’t really like what I came up with.

Sure, there ARE stories to tell, but they’re real life, not some world I whipped up from nothing — and that’s what I really want to do, breathe life into something. After my first try writing in the genre, I stopped forcing myself. I guess I just have not fallen in love with an idea yet, but I know it will come to me…I hope, though, that it comes to me soon, hehehe.

Cool blog, btw.

I Write To Express My Thoughts
I Write To Share My Insights
I Write To Teach People
I Write To See People’s Point-Of-View
I Write To Better Understand My Readers

And list goes on and on and on. I cannot call myself a writer but I write because it relaxes me. Release that certain tension shouting inside me.

@Melita
I also would like to try my hand on writing fiction. I love making up stories!

@Rob
Great list! I especially like ‘I Write to See People’s Point-of-View’. It’s such a true statement.
