The Chicago Sun-Times, a respected newspaper in the United States, has been put up for sale. But so far, no one’s buying.
Could this be a sign that the newspaper industry is going the way of the dodo?
The newspaper is long been predicted to go obsolete with the advent of the Internet. Although its proponents still believe it still has a long way to go, but the change is starting to be felt.
Locally, all the major newspapers now have their own web equivalents. Most prominent of this is the Philippine Daily Inquirer with Inquirer.net.
In the US, shares of major newspaper groups are going down. The Washington Post Company is down 24 percent while the New York Times Company went down 26 percent. This trend probably is the reason why both companies have invested heavily in an online newspaper business.

agree…looks like competition is getting tighter…
I think this is going to be obsolete if there will be more people who will be reading news from websites. Not everyone get access to the internet. Not all are capable of using the computer too.
We should not also forget that more people are turning to watch news on TV too.
i agree.. ako nga, i no longer bother to look at the papers kasi parang all the info i need, i can find na sa web. i read somewhere na even playboy, the mag, magstop na sa print nila, and would just concentrate on the web tapos mga vids.
I rather hope newspapers don’t become obsolete. Without them, I have nothing to read during breakfast and lunch, and the thought of not having something to read is rather freaky.
I also don’t wish to see newspapers go extinct. Although I admit that lately I seldom read them because I do most of my news-reading online.
There’s still nothing to replace the sensation of flipping the pages with your fingers as opposed to flipping website pages with your mouse.
