Happy 10th Year Anniversary!

by Mj Ces on November 13, 2008

Well, I’m not exactly greeting anybody. I just happened to hear someone say that over the radio. There’s a glaring error in that greeting, a grammatical one. I hope you can see it, too.

I just want to know if people are aware of it.

So I’ll say it again,

Happy 10th Year Anniversary!

Please leave a comment if you do find the error.  :)

It’s right to say Happy 10th Anniversary, not Happy 10th Year Anniversary.

It’s redundant ;o)

so that’s the error…

well, only grammar gurus can notice that, most of the time, they just let it be.

but, I will remember that.

thanks! ;)

Yeah. I agree that most of the time, people just let it be. But it doesn’t hurt to be reminded once in a while. :)

abelle is right, it should be happy 10th anniversary. tama din si roy, kadalasan ang mga ganitong errors hindi napapansin at di na rin pinapansin. sa totoo lang if may mga nakanotice, they don’t bother to correct it.

have a great week ahead ;)

WebbieGurl November 23, 2008 at 5:27 pm

WebbieGurl says…

Of course that is very wrong… anniversary already denotes annual thing and annual means yearly… saying “year anniversary” is saying one thing twice…. (anni is plural of the word anno in Italian)

anyway, it is normal to be heard in the philippines… indeed people do not bother about it… and even most of the popular words are misspelled… although popularity does not mean correctness, if people don’t bother, eveyone ends up understanding that the word is correct in a sense…

take the example of the word “all right” where everyone writes “alright” and many think it is indeed “alright” to have all right spelled as alright, although it is not right.

Yes, it should have been “Happy 10th Year” or “Happy 10th Anniversary” instead.

Redundancy is a real crime when it comes to grammar. But we can`t really blame people when they do that.

I admit that I`m one of those people who`s guilty of this crime. But it really happens unconsciously. I mean, when you`re into like extemporaneous speaking, things like this is no longer a big deal…

But I`ve got to tell you this, surely I could tolerate people`s redundancy when it comes to speaking, but be it in writing is a big NO! Hehe.

Yes, we do tend to be more lenient when people make mistakes as they speak. It’s natural.

Hello,

I’m terrible with grammar, which explained why I didn’t catch the error. I agree with Roy, only true grammarians are able to notice it. Great job on your part, and thank your for pointing it to out to us. I’ve learned something new today.

If you ever get bored and would like to correct more stuff on-line, my web novel, The Big Picture, at http://lovenandromance.tashabud.blogspot.com needs editing, big time. You may contact me at this email address: tashabud@gmail.com

BTW, thanks for dropping me an Entrecard.

I love your last remark about being more lenient of people’s spoken grammatical errors… that’s big of you, heh heh, after all there’s no backspace or delete embedded under a person’s tongue! :-)

(Gods, I hope the grammar of the above comment is correct!)

I must admit I didn’t catch that. I was thinking there should be a hypen between 10th and year. Oops. I’ll definitely make a mental note of this.

The Word “year” shouldn’t be in the greeting :)

Hmmm, reminds me “Tuition Fee,” which is very common in the local school and university system. >.<

As for letting these grammatical transgressions be, let me quote Nicole Kidman's character in the film Australia:

"Just because it is, doesn't mean it should be. "
