Pitching: How to Get Blog Post Ideas

I used to work and sit right next to an SEO specialist. A day never goes by without a scene like this:

“Stupid! You’re so stupid! That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Or…

“You think it might work? Probably, right? Let’s give it a shot.”

The thing is, all that time he was just talking to himself! I once commented that he was starting to lose his marbles.

“I was just talking to my imaginary assistant,” he said.

Apparently, it was his way of bouncing ideas off someone else and since he had no one to work directly with, he opted to talk to himself instead.

The guy was actually brilliant and he was one of the most intelligent fellows I’ve ever known. What he was doing was actually pitching his ideas so he could get a better perspective of it.

I used to do that when I was part of a group of writers. Every Monday morning, we would gather in the conference room and pitch our ideas on the table. Each of us was given 15 minutes to pitch our story ideas and the rest take turns to praise it or turn it down. It was a very healthy process and it helped us come up with great stories.

You can also use pitching if you think you have a great blog post idea. Why not just write it and then post it without pitching the idea first to others? You can do that, of course, but sometimes after we write something that at first sounded brilliant, we also get the feeling that it might not actually be as interesting and revolutionary as we first thought it was.

Trying to grasp that idea.

That is why pitching our blog post ideas to someone is a great manner of counter-checking. What was brilliant to us might be pure insanity to others.

I always bother my girlfriend whenever I think of something interesting to write. I pitch my ideas to her and she helps me clarify my thoughts and add a twist or two to them. When she’s unavailable, I open my Yahoo! Messenger and buzz the first friend that I see online. I don’t care if I interrupt them. All I care is that I find someone to pitch my stories to.

But I avoid talking to myself as much as possible. At least not out loud. :D
